From the 1950's to Present - my editorial comments on the 57  When starting to gather information for this page, I realized that most have already been catalogued  in my articles.  Though there are many color variations of the '57 models, there are few manufacturers.  It would be real nice if some manufacturer happened to visit these pages and decide to add the '57 model to their line-up.  I've heard from a number of collectors wishing there was someone who made a diecast '57 Thunderbird in the 1:24 to 1:18th size range.  After all, this was the most popular of the 2-seater Thunderbirds, selling more than 20,000 as compared to 16,000+ for the '55 and 15,000+ for the 56.  It is still the most sought after of the three years (don't take offense now if you love your '55 or '56).  The '56 has received the most attention from model manufacturers (I suspect due to the American Graffitti exposure) and the '55 is close behind with the '57 receiving the least. It is interesting to note that the '55 used to have the smallest # until just the last 10 years when the Thunderbird reached it's 35th & 40th anniversry.   Breakthrough!! Finally! The year 2000 saw the first diecast 1/18 scale 57 T'bird made. Only problem, the continental kit was added. To make matters worse, the bumper extension for the kit was molded with the body. Then a silly tachometer was added to the steering column. Wouldn't it surprise the manufacturers to learn that the tach was incorporated into the dash along with the rest of the dash instruments - it was NOT an add on! I must admit though, that the model is still very well done and worthy of anybody's collection. Colors for it are great. Will look forward to seeing more colors if Yat MIng decides to continue producing the model BUT WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE THAT CONTINENTAL KIT (AND BUMPER EXTENSION) DISAPPEAR.  Lets hope the NEXT new model of the 57 gets better treatment. That must by why the Hot Wheels hardtop 57 t-bird is so much more saught after than the convertible (topless) versions that Hot Wheels/Matchbox sells.  The year 2002 saw just that happen as Ertl released their 1/18 scale model t-bird for the Ford Precision 100 series commemorating the 100th anniversary of Ford in 2003.  In 2003, Mattel Hot Wheels released 2 1/18 scale models of the 57 - drag racing versions - without the cont'l kits, too. Because I have written my articles on several of the manufacturers of the '57 models and have lists already in place for those models, there will just be links to those pages in the lists.  The few odd manufacturers will be listed as completely as possible.  As usual, if I have left out a model, plmk (please let me know). As has happened to the 55 and 56 lists, the 57 list has been divided into several pages due to size restraints of the html program I'm using.  Update: 2005 saw another FIRST for the 1957 model.  YatMing must have someone that reads my pages and saw my request for the 1/24 scale model diecast.  They made it happen! and it appears to be a hit on eBay, sometimes bringing $20.00 or more for one model even though a full set of the 6 colors available can be bought on eBay sometimes at a starting bid of $29. Update #2:  2007 is the '57s 50th anniversary and Danbury Mint is offering a pink 1/24 scale very well detailed model.  Danbury has already done anniversary models in 1/24 scale for the '55 and the '56.
